Literacy Connection, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that seeks to empower parents and families through collaborative initiatives such as trainings and resources that encourage meaningful involvement in the academic careers of their children. Our goal is to ensure that we erase the "book gap" globally by distributing books to children, providing family and community workshops, offering consulting services that instill the importance of reading and modeling strategies to support a developing reading culture.
We look forward to strengthening the home-school-community partnerships through engaging activities and empowering events all to increase literacy levels.
I am Dr. Tia Major, Founder/CEO of Literacy Connection. My 30 years as an educator and library media specialist compelled me to discover holistic ways to engage children and families to increase student achievement. Linking the Library to Literacy (LLL) was a school-based initiative I started to minimize the “achievement” and “book” gap through collaborative efforts that strengthened the home-school-community partnership. Initially, with the help of my dedicated colleagues, we seized every opportunity to lure our families into the learning process by implementing morning workshops for the families of early learners, high engaging family workshops aligned with the curriculum presented at PTA meetings, collaborative community outreach events, book drives to build home libraries, and much more. While faced with many systemic challenges, we were diligent in our efforts to tailor experiences and resources that would increase literacy levels. After strategic implementation of researched based strategies, this initiative became the topic of my dissertation and resulted in a favorable study. Moreover, LLL earned the prestigious, “Broward County’s Most Outstanding Family Program 2008 & 2011. Due to the success of the program and the need for this brand of service in our community, I established Literacy Connection, Inc. as a nonprofit organization, in 2014. In keeping with our foundation, we are committed to promoting literacy in children and families through programs, products, events and resources. To date, we have distributed over 19,700 books, engaged more than 4,400 families in our program services, with help from 172 volunteers, 200+ sponsors and partners. I am humbled by the support and generosity of those who chose this organization to make a difference. There is still so much to do….and we can’t do it without you. I urge you to continue to support our mission. We need you now more than ever. Due to the pandemic, the strain on education is disheartening. We know that our families are in desperate need of programs and resources to help recharge their child’s academic careers.
Together, we can empower families, strengthen schools and build communities.
