The most successful way to improve reading achievement of low-income children is to increase access to print. Studies have long shown that access to printed learning materials early on in a child’s development has both an immediate and long-term effect on their vocabulary, knowledge and conprehension (Room to Read 2021).
The Black Church Book Tour serves Black children representing low socio-economic communities. The objectives are to ignite a child’s passion for reading by strengthening vocabulary through interactive storytelling and by the distribution of literacy boosting products including diverse children’s books, to build home libraries and reinforce literacy skills.
